Note To Self

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

Dear Self,

I know things have been crazy lately between moving, birthday parties, trips, jobs, sports, marriage, motherhood, daughterhood, and all the other callings you have been chosen for in this life. I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know, you’re KILLING it! You are doing an awesome job! Not because you’re the next championship coach, not because you’re going to receive an award for the “best 5 year old birthday party ever”, not even because you’re going to set a record for the speed at which you have unpacked your house, and “settled” your family. You’re killing it because you show up. Every. Single. Day.  You show up to each day, ready to tackle the millions of things that are going to cross your mind. You accept the challenge of running a family, having a career, and growing in your relationships. You accept that challenge, and run the entire race of the day, not slowing until you have taken that last stride across the finish line whether it be at 10pm or 2am, and let’s get real, 10 pm is almost a joke right now.

With all the daily hustle, I want you to remember that you’re killing it. I also want to remind you that, all they want is you. It’s okay to be busy. It’s okay to have things to get done. But don’t be so busy that you spend all of these years trying to make a home that you forget to live in it. A home is more than the place you sleep at night. It’s the place your family makes memories, shares in sorrow, learns to love and forgive, and can safely explore who they are. Don’t focus on rushing to a point that you can participate in this amazing opportunity. That point is NOW. That point is in the MIDST of all the crazy. That point will NEVER come unless you decide it’s here and now. There will always be more laundry, more dishes, more lunches to pack, more paperwork to fill out, and more events to plan. Those things will never cease, but these precious years with your young family are fleeting. Don’t let them go without a fight.

Lastly but most importantly, I want to encourage you. I want to encourage you to invest in 3 things that will multiple into all areas of your life:

Your relationship with the Lord
Your relationship with your Spouse
Your relationship with yourself

1. Your relationship with the Lord is the ONLY relationship that can give you everything you need. It is completely sustaining, because the Bible reminds us in Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” If you allow it, this relationship will leak into every single thing you do. It will strengthen you. It will bless you. It will sustain you.

        2. Your relationship with your Spouse is vital. When you said “I Do”, two became one. Two cannot function separately without the same goals and achieve their purpose. Two eyes cannot both see, if one eye sleeps while the other is awake. Two ears cannot both hear if one is covered, and unaware of the noises outside of itself. Marriage is a partnership, and your spouse is your relay partner in this run at life. Don’t be afraid to pass the baton. Train together for this life, pray together, and focus on your partner’s wellbeing. Together you can tackle these challenges, but not if you don’t work at it. That may mean saying “no” to doing petty things that consume our time, in exchange for QUALITY time with your spouse. Time that builds your relationship. Remember, your other half should not come second to all of the other daily chaos.

            3. Your relationship with yourself is going to be reflected in your family. When you love yourself enough to say “no” to over commitments, and you love yourself enough to take 5 seconds to yourself in the day to remind yourself how GREAT you are doing… your actions towards those you love will glow with this affection. You must take care of you, so that you have enough to give to them. An empty gas tank can want to fuel a car all it wants, but without gas, it simply cannot. Don’t forget to invest a little bit of time each day into reminding yourself who you are in God, a uniquely designed creation, and how awesome you are through him!

I know you are busy, and have to get back to your daily “to-dos”. Hold these things dear. Do not forget the power you possess in the lives of those around you. The power to build them up or destroy them. The power to nurture them or harm them.  The power to encourage and inspire. Use this power wisely. Now go on, and finish the race today. The bullhorn blows early tomorrow morning, and I know you will be ready.
